The Lazaridis School of Business and Economics is pleased to announce the recipients of a new series of awards in recognition of research and teaching excellence.
“The Lazaridis School is home to exceptional faculty who demonstrate excellence in both research and teaching. These awards are a meaningful way to recognize their dedication and talent,” says Lazaridis School Vice Dean, Fabricio Perez. “I believe recognition matters, not just as appreciation, but as motivation to continue pushing boundaries in research and delivering outstanding learning experiences to our students.”
Join us in celebrating the inaugural recipients of the Lazaridis Research Excellence Awards and the Glenn Carrol Teaching Fellowship: Excellence in Experiential Learning and Education.
The Lazaridis Research Excellence award recognizes Lazaridis School professors who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to research and scholarship over the past two years.
Research: Growth and scaling in entrepreneurship, with interests in international entrepreneurship, capability development, and entrepreneurial networks. She has published in top FT50 journals, including the Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice.
Anne Domurath secured two Lazaridis Institute research grants and served as an invited speaker at leading academic consortia and conferences. She actively mentors PhD students and serves on multiple doctoral committees, while contributing to the academic community as a reviewer and editorial board member.
Research: Applied microeconomist specializing in political economy and development economics with interests in conflict, media, political communication, and legislative behavior.
Recently, Juan Morales’ work has been published in leading journals such as The Economic Journal, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Social Media + Society. Morales has been featured in media outlets including The New York Times and National Public Radio. His research agenda explores how digital technologies affect political outcomes, with ongoing projects studying social media and elections, online dissent, and patterns of media consumption.
Research: Fixed income, credit risk, financial intermediation, and financial markets. His work has been published in the FT50 publication, Journal of Financial Economics, and leading journals Review of Corporate Finance Studies and Journal of Financial Intermediation.
In his time at ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨, Madhu Kalimipalli has been awarded over $800,000 in research funding and is the recipient of multiple university merit awards. He has supervised 19 PhD dissertations and over 30 graduate research projects and has served as Director of PhD and Research-Based Master’s Programs and of the Financial Services Research Centre.
Research: Supply chain management, sustainable operations, revenue management, and behavioral operations, with publications in top journals such as Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, Production and Operations Management and European Journal of Operational Research.
In her time at ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨, Xuan Zhao secured over $1.5 million in research funding and received multiple best paper and citation awards. She has supervised postdoctoral fellows and PhD students who now serve in academic and government roles. She serves on national grant committees, editorial boards, and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo.
This award is presented in honour of Glenn Carroll, a distinguished ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨ business professor and the first Dean of the School of Business and Economics. This fellowship highlights faculty members who enhance student experience with innovative teaching methods and demonstrate excellence in Lazaridis classrooms.
Rima Khatib is known for her innovative use of Generative AI in university teaching. It earned a Best Paper nomination at the International Conference on Information Systems with over 800 interactions from just 40 students in one term.
Khatib promotes experiential learning through ERPsim simulations, community consulting projects and a student-developed cybersecurity website. Her teaching is consistently praised in peer and student evaluations, and she actively supports faculty development and curriculum innovation.
Eve Lamargot sees teaching as a transformative practice. She has coordinated courses, mentored instructors, and created thousands of questions and original cases. She launched a gamified version of ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨’s online managerial accounting course, earning national and international recognition. She also co-led curriculum redesigns and supports peer learning through ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨’s teaching observation program.
Dorian Lane uses videos, current events, and gamified exercises to connect concepts to real-world applications. Her Jeopardy-style review game makes exam preparation more interactive. As an instructor in our Graduate Diploma in Accounting, she aligns her teaching with industry standards and supports the development of future accounting professionals.
Ebrahim Mazaheri is especially recognized for integrating experiential learning into every course he teaches. Through live client projects, simulation games, and case-based assignments, he enables students to apply marketing concepts to real-world business challenges. He is known for creating highly engaging classes and consistently receives strong praise and high teaching evaluations from students across the Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration programs.
Steve Risavy has led several experiential learning initiatives and brings real-world business problems into his classes to enhance relevance and engagement. Risavy’s commitment to teaching excellence earned him the 2025 Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award from ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨ as well. He has continued to innovate through his scholarship of teaching and learning publications, many of which focus on helping other management educators innovate upon their own teaching practices.
