I am a Malaysian-Canadian choral conductor, music educator, composer, vocalist, and pianist. I completed a Doctor in Musical Arts and Master in Music Performance (Choral Conducting) from the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, a Bachelor of Music (Piano Performance) from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and Associate and Licentiate Diplomas in Singing and Piano from the Australian Music Examinations Board and Trinity College London, UK. Prior to my appointment at ·ï»Ë²ÊƱƽ̨, I taught at Western University and McMaster University, Canada.
My active national and international artistic work includes: Co-Conductor of the 2025 American Choral Directors Association National Conference (Southeast Asian Immersion Choir), Conductor of the 2024 Organization of American Kodály Educators (Concert Treble Choir) and the 2024 British Columbia Youth Choir, keynote speaker for the 2024 Kodály Australia National Conference, Co-Conductor of the 2023 Asia Pacific Youth Choir (International Federation of Choral Music), atelier leader of Choralies 2025 (France) and Europa Cantat Junior 2023 (Flanders/Belgium), former Conductor of the Grand Philharmonic Youth Choir (Kitchener, Ontario), and singer with Babεl and Exultate Chamber Singers (Toronto).
My research writing has been published by the International Federation of Choral Music, Kodály Society of Canada, and the American Choral Directors Association. I am the co-author of the “Choral Connections” column for the Canadian Music Educator Journal, alongside Dr. Mark Ramsay, and regularly present at provincial, national, and international conferences on effective choral pedagogy, culturally-responsive repertoire, and conductor-composer collaborations.
As a composer-arranger, my music is featured in numerous reading sessions and international choral events. Besides owning a self-publishing series exclusively distributed by Graphite Publishing, my choral works are also published by Oxford University Press, ICC Publishing House (distributed by Beckenhorst Press), Hinshaw Music, and Cypress Choral Music. My artistic output also extends to commissioned choral compositions and arrangements, national and international collaborative and innovative choral initiatives, guest conducting residencies, presentations, and choral workshops.
My creative scholarly work supports appropriate and diverse performance practice in choral music. I continue to be energized by creative choral collaboration that positively impacts and sustains the choral community while advocating for historically under-represented communities. I encourage repertoire-based music education by composing choral pieces that are teaching tools for singers to develop vocal technique, musicianship skills, and artistry.
